What do we consider a best practice after giving nose drops?

After administering nose drops, it is considered a best practice for the client to remain in a supine position for a certain period of time. This position supports proper distribution of the medication within the nasal passages and helps minimize the potential for it to drain out prematurely. When the client remains supine, it allows the drops to remain in contact with the mucosal surfaces of the nasal cavity longer, potentially increasing the effectiveness of the medication.

Maintaining an upright position or resuming normal activities immediately could lead to the drops being expelled or not absorbed adequately. Remaining standing, similarly, does not offer the same benefits as lying back, as it may hinder the medication's effectiveness. Hence, advising the client to stay in a supine position reflects an understanding of the pharmacokinetics involved with nasal administration and enhances the therapeutic outcome.
